Cinda Firestone Fox , The Documentaries
Cinda Firestone Fox has certainly never been afraid of a challenge and this was evident even before her glittering career as a writer, producer, editor, and director. During her early years at Miss Porter’s Boarding School in Farmington, Connecticut, she started a campaign to make church attendance voluntary rather than obligatory and, as a result, had two ministers preach against her during sermons. She then went on to close down Sarah Lawrence College in strike against the Vietnam War and was jailed during a strike for the same movement.
While working as a journalist for the radical publication Liberation News Service she met director Emile de Antonio and, having learned that he was looking for an assistant, left her journalism job to work for him. Shortly afterwards she documented the prison take-over at Attica; a film which kick-started her directing and producing career. Despite early acclaim, the popularity of the film subdued because of publication and distribution problems but a rerelease has once again made it a prominent piece of documentary film.
Following the success of Attica, Cinda Firestone Fox went on to film three more documentaries, this time based on retirement and people’s attitudes towards or against it. These too were viewed as being powerful works of documentary film but led to Cinda becoming ill. On her recovery, at the age of 35, she married Broadway director Manny Fox and turned her own attention further towards musicals and Broadway in particular. Since then, Cinda Firestone Fox has become a well known name in Broadway having written the musical comedy Family Fortune as well as the musicals Madame, Te Quiero, and Fox Hunt.
